Doreen Young was born and brought up in Stoke Newington, North London, with her identical twin and younger sister. She worked in Meteorology and Geology as a Scientific Officer before beginning a long career as a teacher of English in Boarding education, first for five years as Housemistress at Culford School, Bury St. Edmunds, then, also locally, until retirement. To be cast as the 1940s Teacher in the BBC Series 'Evacuation' gave her the most privileged teaching moments among many. Now, she likes to teach herself, to write.
